What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is a field of internal medicine that revolves around the digestive tract, including the stomach, liver, small intestine and colon. As a medical specialty, it manages conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), biliary tract disease and other digestive disorders and gastrointestinal diseases.

The digestive system is responsible for breaking down nutrients, absorbing essential elements and removing waste from the body. Because of this, when disruptions occur due to diseases or lifestyle factors, it can result in severe abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and other digestive symptoms.

Our gastroenterologists and general surgeons perform a wide range of endoscopic procedures to help diagnose and treat these conditions, all for the purpose of helping patients manage their symptoms, improve their overall bowel health and live more comfortably.

What do Gastroenterologists do?

Gastroenterologists are well-trained medical specialists who are committed to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. They undergo extensive medical school education followed by specialised training in diagnosing and managing GI conditions.

At Montserrat, our gastroenterologists treat conditions ranging from mild digestive symptoms to serious gastrointestinal disorders. Using the latest diagnostic techniques – such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, our specialists carry out evaluations and deliver the most effective treatments according to each patient’s needs.

Whether you are experiencing chronic digestive issues or need a routine colon cancer screening, our team is here to help with compassionate and expert care.

What To Expect At Your Appointment

When you visit Montserrat Medical Services, your specialist will take a detailed medical history, discuss your symptoms and determine whether further testing is needed. You might be referred for blood tests, an upper endoscopy or a colonoscopy to help diagnose and treat your gastroenterology condition.

If you are scheduled for an endoscopic procedure, you will receive pre-procedure instructions, including fasting guidelines and requirements for how to prepare. A GP referral is necessary to see a Montserrat specialist, and your referral will be reviewed to confirm whether a face-to-face consultation, telehealth appointment or direct-access endoscopy is the best approach.

Make sure you check with your insurance provider to see if you have an adequate level of cover and to confirm any out-of-pocket expenses.

Our Procedures

Montserrat specialises in minimally invasive procedures that can diagnose and treat a number of different digestive tract conditions. Some of our most common procedures include:

  • Gastroscopy: An upper lower GI tract procedure used to examine the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. It can be used to investigate gastroesophageal reflux, ulcers and unexplained abdominal pain.
  • Colonoscopy and polypectomy: A procedure used to detect colon polyps, screen for colon cancer and remove abnormal growths.
  • Capsule endoscopy (PillCam): A non-invasive test that uses a swallowable camera to capture images of the small intestine.
  • Iron infusions: A treatment for patients with iron deficiency anaemia, which can be a by-product of chronic digestive conditions.

Most procedures require some preparation such as fasting or bowel preparation. You will be sent your booking details and all necessary instructions on what to do before your procedure and what to expect afterwards.
