Dr Mark Norrie is a distinguished Gastroenterologist with over 25 years of experience in the field. He has a comprehensive background in treating a wide array of gastrointestinal conditions, with a special interest in:

  • Bowel Cancer (Colorectal Cancer) Screening
  • Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy Procedures
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Qualifications
Dr Norrie’s diverse and fulfilling medical career spans both Australia and New Zealand. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1988, followed by his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1996.

In 2001, Dr Norrie completed his PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of New South Wales, focusing on molecular genetics and colon cancer. Dr Norrie then joined Montserrat in 2003, bringing his extensive expertise to our team. His pursuit for medical knowledge continued and in 2008, he completed a Graduate Diploma in Drug Development from the University of New South Wales.

He enjoys treating patients in Longreach as much as Brisbane, describing them as both grateful and candid.

Rapid & Direct Endoscopy (Open Access)
Dr Norrie is a Senior Gastroenterologist at Montserrat, where he offers Rapid and Direct Endoscopy services. Rapid and Direct Endoscopy allows eligible patients to schedule their endoscopies within two weeks, bypassing the initial specialist consultation when appropriate. This service streamlines the diagnostic process, particularly for those with positive results from Australia’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, ensuring timely investigation and reduced wait times for patients.

Privately Insured No Gap Services
Dr Norrie is a no-gap provider. Patients with sufficient private health insurance pay no gap for their procedure, apart from any applicable excess or co-payment. Please note, this does not include Anaesthetist fees, which can sometimes be charged separately.

Awards and publications
Dr Norrie received The New Zealand Young Investigators Award in 2002 for his PhD research into gene methylation in colorectal biology carcinoma. He has been widely published in the past 20 years, writing numerous papers on colorectal cancer, in addition to improving gluten tolerance in celiac disease.


Volunteering & Mentoring
Dr Norrie volunteers annually with ANZGITA (the Australian & New Zealand Gastroenterology International Training Association), providing his services and expertise in developing countries including Myanmar, Fiji, and, more recently, the Solomon Islands. He describes volunteering as a deeply rewarding experience, where he imparts his knowledge and teaches skills to help local doctors become more self-reliant and less dependent on assistance from developed countries. Committed to sharing his extensive knowledge, Dr Norrie also served as a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University in 2010.


Outside of work,
Dr Norrie likes to stay fit and see the world pursuing his passion for running, reading and travelling.
